The Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (Driver Training) Regulations 1996.
New Regulations concerning the training of drivers came into force on 1st September 1996. These Regulations require drivers of certain vehicles carrying Dangerous Substances, which fall, within the scope of the Regulations to:-

• Attend and complete an approved training course.

• Pass an approved City & Guilds examination.

• Obtain a vocational driver training certificate.

• Carry a valid current vocational driver-training certificate during the carriage of dangerous goods.

• Attend a refresher course and pass an approved examination within 12 months preceding the expiry of the certificate.

• Produce your driver-training certificate to a Police Officer or Goods Vehicle examiner when required.

Your Dangerous Goods Vocational Licence will be valid for 5 years for National and International journeys throughout Europe.

CLASSES OF DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES
Dangerous substances are grouped into 9 classes. Some classes are sub-divided. The major classes are:
Class 1 EXPLOSIVES
Class 2 GASES
Class 3 FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS
Class 4.1 FLAMMABLE SOLIDS
Class 4.2 SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTIBLE
Class 4.3 DANGEROUS WHEN WET
Class 5.1 OXIDISING AGENTS
Class 5.2 ORGANIC PEROXIDES
Class 6.1 TOXIC OR HARMFUL SUBSTANCES
Class 6.2 INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES
Class 7 RADIOACTIVES
Class 8 CORROSIVES
Class 9 MISCELLANEOUS
